Magic Watercolor Background Remover

Tired of spending hours removing the background on your watercolor scans? Me too! That is why I created the Magic Watercolor Background Remover. This is an Adobe Photoshop script that will remove the background from your watercolor scans in seconds (It took 2 minutes to remove the background of 131 files).

This is my new product – available on Gumroad! It is a script to remove watercolor backgrounds automagically!

It took some time to complete it and test it, but I am so happy with the results!

Installing Your New Photoshop Script

  1. Download your files to your computer
  2. Unzip
  3. Find the file named: Magic Watercolor Background Remover.jsx, right click and copy.
  4. Locate the Script folder for Adobe Photoshop – it is usually in “../Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2021/Presets/Scripts/”
    1. This folder may be different depending on your Photoshop version
  5. Paste Magic Watercolor Background Remover.jsx in the Scripts folder
  6. Open Photoshop – If it was already open, you need to close it and re-open
  7. You are ready to run your script! Select File > Scripts > Magic Watercolor Background Remover.jsx

Running your Magic Watercolor Background Remover

  1. In Photoshop, Select File > Scripts > Magic Watercolor Background Remover.jsx
  1. You will be asked for the folder where your images are located – navigate to the folder where you have images that need the background removed and click OK.
  1. Now you will be asked for the folder where you want to save the cleaned up files. Navigate to that folder and click OK.
  2. Sit back and relax! Your files will be saved with the same names as the originals, but with a .png extension.

Tips for best results

  1. This will adjust the color of your scans to ensure that the background is white and removable – watercolors that are too soft and faded will not yield good results, like the twig on the example below
  1. The sampling area for the white is on the top left corner of the image, so the script will work better if there is a space without paint there (see the area highlighted in red on the picture below.
