If you’ve ever sat in front of a blank sketchbook, wondering what on earth to design next, you’ll know the value of a good brainstorming process. I’ve been experimenting with AI tools like ChatGPT and MidJourney to speed up the “idea-to-sketch” stage of my pattern design workflow — and the results have been magical. If you want other suggestions on productivity – check out this post.
In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how I combined these tools to develop a concept for my Whimsy Goth pattern collection, from moodboards and motifs to color palettes and even fabric pattern names.
Step 1 — Using ChatGPT for Theme Discovery
It all started with a little spark of inspiration: while browsing Anthropologie’s website, I spotted a style reference called Whimsy Goth Décor. The phrase instantly caught my attention — it felt mysterious, romantic, and totally aligned with my style.
I jumped into ChatGPT and asked:
“Tell me about Whimsy Goth décor.”
ChatGPT painted a picture of an aesthetic that blends dark, moody gothic vibes with playful, nostalgic whimsy — think Tim Burton meets fairy tale energy. It also broke down key elements like:
  • Color Palette: deep tones, rich metallics
  • Textures: velvet, brocade, lace, aged glass, brass
  • Motifs: celestial symbols, mystical prints, vintage trinkets, apothecary jars, crystals
This was enough to get my imagination racing.
Step 2 — Prompting for Collection Details
Next, I asked ChatGPT to act as a Pinterest consultant and help me name and describe a Whimsy Goth Aesthetic board. From there, I refined the vibe further:
“I’m looking to create a fabric collection inspired by Whimsy Goth — Night Court from ACOTAR meets Anthropologie.”
ChatGPT delivered a poetic collection description and, even better, 20 themed pattern name ideas such as:
  • Celestial Oath
  • Garden of Secrets
  • Moonlit Oracle
  • Obsidian Fog
  • Gossamer Veil
It also gave me a CSV list with hero prints, blenders, coordinates, and the motifs I’d need to create — from moons and thorny vines to serpents, celestial geometry, and gothic florals.

Step 3 — Turning Words into Visual Moodboards with MidJourney
Once I had a clear creative direction, it was time to visualize. I opened MidJourney and prompted it to create a Whimsy Goth fashion pattern collection moodboard.
The first drafts instantly clicked — dark florals, moths, ravens, celestial motifs, and a perfect moody color palette. I iterated on my favorite elements:
  • Florals mixed with moon phases and zodiac-inspired backdrops
  • Mystical geometric shapes woven into botanical patterns
  • Dramatic ravens, antlers, and feathers
  • William Morris–inspired dark floral repeats
Some iterations went too gothic or macabre for my taste (skulls and overly grim imagery), but even those gave me new directions to explore.
Step 4 — Expanding the Motif Library
I experimented with adding:
  • Tarot cards (imagined with celestial and floral accents)
  • Gothic arches intertwined with blooms
  • Snakes with floral-filled silhouettes
  • Owls with jewel-toned feathers and pops of pink
  • Dahlias, chrysanthemums, and hellebores in moody palettes
By the end, I had a rich visual library and dozens of possible pattern concepts.
Step 5 — Why This Works
Using ChatGPT and MidJourney together is like having both a creative director and a visual stylist at your fingertips.
  • ChatGPT organizes your ideas, sparks new ones, and helps you think in cohesive collection terms (names, motifs, palette).
  • MidJourney quickly translates those ideas into imagery, so you can see your aesthetic before you ever open Illustrator or Procreate.
This method saves hours of aimless Pinterest scrolling and gives me a clear starting point when I sit down to draw.
Final Thoughts
This Whimsy Goth experiment reminded me that AI doesn’t replace creativity — it accelerates it. By combining thoughtful prompts with visual iteration, you can go from vague inspiration to a fully fleshed-out pattern collection concept in an afternoon.
If you’re a surface pattern designer, illustrator, or creative looking to try this method, start with:
  1. Choosing a theme or vibe you’re curious about
  2. Asking ChatGPT to expand it into motifs, palettes, and names
  3. Using MidJourney to generate moodboards and refine the look
You’ll be amazed at how quickly ideas start flowing.
